Costochondritis- And Gluten

What is gluten?

Gluten is a special type of protein that is commonly found in rye, wheat, and barley. There are hundreds of ingredients that derive from gluten.

So here's the delio. You all know me. I'm like the eternal lab rat for Costo. Anything for the cause. lol. Someone joked on another post that although the commended me for all that I've tried, the liver flush was pushing it. HAHA! So true. But hey, tough times call for tough measure, people!

So what am I currently giving a whirl? You guessed it. I'm on the gluten free train. I've been gluten free for 4 weeks and 6 days. But who's counting. I've been monitoring my pain, and I won't lie, I've noticed some wonderful differences in the crap shoot called Costo. My stabbing attacks are fewer and farther between. And there is no bulge in my stomach pushing up into my ribs. Gross. And since I've cut out all gluten, white potatoes, oils, and fried food, my pain has not once increased due to my eating choices. Holla!

"What do you eat?" One might ask. Well, to that I answer, "I chomp on organic rice, veggies, fruit, flax pretzels, beans, some yummy gluten free animal crackers in awkward shapes that look nothing like animals, sweet potatoes, and salads. " I know, very exciting. But after I mourned all the comfort food that has been a really good friend on the days where I can't move, but I can eat...I got over it. Gotta do what I gotta do.

Will I stay gluten free? Yes. I'll continue to monitor it, I'm crazy about writing stuff down on my calender. lol. Will I heal from this? I dunno. But I'm giving it a minimum of 3 months. I'll keep you posted.

So how would gluten cause Costo? Celiac disease is one possibility.
  • 1 in 133 people have Celiac,
  • Close to 97% of people with Celiac are undiagnosed
  • On average it takes 11 years for someone with Celiac to get diagnosed
  • Over 200 unrelated symptoms can present themselves.
  • Other possibilities of gluten derived costochondritis can be a result of allergies or intolerance to gluten.

Do I think everyone with Costo has Celiac? Heck no. I'm not saying that at all, I'm just in the business of putting as much information out there as possible so that everyone can come to their own conclusions. lol. I just said I'm in the business.

So if you under the impression that your pain increases after you eat certain foods, take this as a positive thing- you have another clue that inflammation is being caused by what you're eating. Does this suck? You bet your best Barbie it does. Ugg. I don't even like Barbie. Plastic, unrealistic, perfection. gag. However, all
I'll I'm saying is that you really should take this clue as a positive thing. Explore it. Keep a journal of all the ingredients in the foods you eat that cause more pain. Keep digging, people!

And throw your Barbies in a dumpster.

  1. Hi Luce. Glad to hear pain is lessened by this glut free thing. I was just cleaning my kitchen cabs and came across three gluten free Thai food boxes. I remember when I bought them I didn't know they were gluten free until I went to prepare one. I was upset I got the gluten free (that was over a year ago--hence why they've been sitting in my cabs so long). But now...I'm wondering if I should eat them, and try this gluten free thing out. I say that because I've had a very painful weekend, which is sad.

It could be because I had one of the single most stressful weeks of my life last week, and that set me back. I'm hoping! Staying on the Candex, though. It can take one to four weeks (as I've said), so I must hang in there.

Sorry it's been so long. Like I said, my week was stressful. I worked long hours with city and state officials who had a tip and reason to believe that the water in the building I manage was contaminated. I was worried about sickness, and so worried I'd have to tell 252 residents they need to be displaced out of their condos until the water was claimed safe. Turns out I didn't have to, but the 48 hours of not knowing was so stressful--I can't tell you. Not to mention, I had some angry residents who wanted answers, even though I didn't have them. And some thought I was hiding facts! Needless to say, again, it brought me back a few steps. I do appreciate the pain, however, because it humbles me and causes me pray for others, like you, when I have it. But I hope I will be a humble pray-er without pain.

    Plugging along,

    Angela

  2. Hi Angela,

Sounds like you have had a really tough week emotionally and physically. =( Eek. I'm so sorry for that. I'm sure such a week was terrible for the pain, makes me cringe thinking about it. Thanks for sharing all of that with me.

Glad you are still rocking out the candex- what week are you on...2? Keep me posted if you do G-Free!

And you are so right, this pain is so humbling. i hope you have a really peaceful night and sleep so good!

    Hugs,
    Lucy

  3. Hi Lucy,
    Long time no comment.
Well, I am just dying to hear your celiac results.
I am a shameless wimp but I have used you as a guinea pig. Definitely decided scrubbing the colon cleanse ideas after your experience. Sure wouldn't want to give up donuts if I don't have to. See? Shameless.
I just get weary of the diet stuff cause darn it! Pain AND no sugar?! I can't face it.
Well, I know gluten free can have sugar but not in the forms I like best!
I haven't written in a LONG time because I was hugely busy and stressed planning and pulling off a conference. I am used to just showing up and presenting but I hosted this one. That added up to one big OUCH and lots of tears BUT it was a great success and I think folks were really touched.
I feel like I hurt if I do nothing so I might as well hurt and do something?
One of the speakers, right before she gave her talk, pointed me out and said she had a Scripture for me. She knew nothing about my costo issues. This was it:
"yet it was our grief he bore, our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishemnet from God, for his own sins! But he was wounded and bruised for our sins. He was chastised that we might have peace, he was lashed - and we were healed." Isa. 53:4,5
Please God, bring on that healing for all of us!

  4. Hi Lucy,

I sure hope the glueten free diet helps you. I am sure it is really hard at first making the sacrifices. Please hang in there, be encouraged by the little changes. Your including us on this journey through this blog is such a blessing, THANK YOU!

I just finished the nine day colon cleanse and liquid fast. No positive difference to report. Really hurting today. Seems as if I "get used" to a certain level of pain and then it steps up again. :o( I am to eat four days solid food and then start the whole body 24 day cleanse. So I will probably start that on Sunday.

A group of us were asked this week why we think God does not heal us. I answered; I believe our hearts need to be what would you have me learn through this trial and how can I use it to bring You glory God? Because for His puposes, we each have each trial we have. He heals some here on earth and some after. He heals all of His chosen when we pass, we do not take any sickness with us. I think we sometimes get caught up in there has to be an answer, a reason, a solution, a fix.

"For My thoughts [are] not your thoughts, Nor [are] your ways My ways," says the LORD.
    ~Isaiah 55:8~

So this is my prayer for all of us:

Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what [is] the width and length and depth and height--to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him [be] glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
    ~Ephesians 3:14-21~

May Our Lord bless you, Mychelle

  6. JENNI,
I'll be your guinea pig any day,- lol. So great to hear from you- no pressure on this end to write often, always a gift when you do- but I know you read and you're there. =)

I so had a hard time letting go of all the fun foods too. No...I threw a fit! lol. Very grown up of me. I started cooking this week- it's been good to make my own food. Lots of work...we shall see. I've never been much of a cooking chick...how does anyone stay fit while cooking?! I made a yummy batch of GF crackers and I wanted to chomp down the WHOLE batch- like pronto!

As far as the cleanses- lol- I don't blame you. That liver flush will make anyone run for the hills. However, if I were to do one, it would be the colon cleanse- my pain got better after that- it was so nice!

So happy for you that the conference was a success. That's awesome. I'm sure it was really stressful. Loved the scripture. Thanks for sharing it with me. Pretty cool. I pray for you often- I so wish all of us lived in the same town and we could have one big costo conference- lol.

I'm so ready for the celiac results as well. I'm continuing to notice positive differences as I get deeper and deeper into this. So...even if they come back negative- I'm going to stay on the train for at least 3 months. We shall see- the lab rat will stay on the wheel. =) I hate that the tests can come back negative and I can still have the Celiac. boo. Ah well- I'll deal with that when it comes. Have a beautiful day.

    Hugs,
    Lucy

    MYCHELLE,

You are a sweetheart. Thanks for always being so generous with your complements- very kind of you. OH! And I'm picking up Breaking Free this week- looking forward to it. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I'm SO SORRY that you are still in a heap of pain after the cleansing. My heart aches for you. I'm so so so sorry you are having a rough day of pain. Thank you for sharing with me where you are and how you are doing. Please keep me posted? Wish I could reach through the internet and give you a light hug.

Thanks for sharing about your class the beautiful scripture. I agree that we can get caught up the healing of our pain, so true. And so true about how we need to learn from our trials and bring glory to God through them- great stuff. I also believe that we, or mostly I, can be out of tune with God and often miss the roads of healing that He wants to bless us with. That's been my own little experience. Last year I was a run away chicken with no direction- lol. And I do think there is a reason for what we are walking through. And we may not know fully until Heaven- but there's a reason- and sometimes it's about us, and sometimes it's not. The good thing about this whole seeking the reason and healing bit is that it can always lead back to the Lord and what glorifies Him.

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing. I love tossing thoughts like theses back and forth.

Hugs to you, it's always a joy to talk with you,
    Lucy

  9. I have also been diagnosed with costochondritis and have been eatting gluten free for a month now, the changes in my pain level were drastic. Very far and few between its such a relief and piece of mind. I highly advise trying it if you haven't youay be suprised. One of the most difficult things I found was it's hard to find gluten free bread so I bought a bread machine and went to the whole foods store where they kindly label everythong that's gluten free on their shelves. So much easier to shop that way and they sell gluten free bread mixes for bread machines.
